Our research

The AUT Smart Systems Materials and Manufacturing Research Centre focuses on multidisciplinary digital smart solutions for sustainable New Zealand manufacturing.

Our mission is to engage in productive research and achieve excellent economic, social and environmental impacts, better products and services for New Zealand’s industry, and outstanding recognition and PBRF outcomes for AUT.

The centre is aligned with MBIE’s Advanced Manufacturing ITP and other major industry challenges including the Carbon-Zero initiatives by Haier or the ongoing H2 initiatives.

Areas of research

Additive Manufacturing Research

Additive technologies enable us to produce complex 3D shapes directly from digital design data.

Future Fibres Lab

In this area we are focusing on the processing of fibres, functionalisation and product development.

Robotics and Automation

System modelling, state estimation, sensing and control of various mechatronic, robotic and biomedical systems.

Tribology and Surface Engineering Lab

A multidisciplinary lab conducting research on different aspects of tribology.
